Well-known for its sheer drop-offs either side, there are technical climbing pitches up to HVS (4c/5a). In big boots and crampons, with dramatic exposure and thin air, the SW ridge is a sustained Difficile, at altitude.

Tim, I have to say as non-climber I look at that beautiful picture and think – is it actually possible to go up there, I couldn’t even begin to think of attempting that! But then it started me thinking, what is the equivalent challenge for me that has that combination of dream, difficulty, but also potential do-ability. I think for me it would be sailing across the Atlantic…. But I guess we all need to find our own ‘triple d’ :)
